CONOR OBERST “Secret Show” @ Rbar

Hey, come close, I’ve got a secret for you.  You may not know this, but you missed out on a super secret show with Bright Eyes frontman, Conor Oberst last night.  Shhhh…Don’t tell anyone, but we were able to capture it for you.

It seemed that the whole Los Angeles indie scene made it out last night for the intimate performance, including the familiar faces of Blake Sennett (Rilo Kiley), Maria Taylor, Alison Sudol (A Fine Frenzy), and Tim Nordwind (Ok Go).

(Tim Nordwind, Alison Sudol)

We were all treated to numerous 10 minute sets from Conor’s friends Luke, Z, Whispertown 2000, and Michael Runion which of course was followed by the much anticipated showcase of the new Conor Oberst material.

Outside of the ongoing banter of a select few in the audience, whom Conor called out during his performance, it was one of the most memorable secret shows Los Angeles has seen in a long while.

Be sure to pick up his new self-titled album which came out TODAY!

SCARS ON BROADWAY @ L.A. Union Station

Monday nite was rocking down at the Union Station in downtown Los Angeles. No, it wasn’t the trains, it was a “secret” performance by SCARS ON BROADWAY to celebrate the release of their debut album which hit stores today July 29th.  This is no side project System fans, SCARS ON BROADWAY are for real!!!!  Daron and the boys ripped through a 40 minute set of all SCARS material, closing with the radio smash hit “They Say”. Not one SOAD song in the bunch!!  We caught up with Daron and John before the show and fans we’re here to tell ya, don’t be holding your breath for a SOAD reunion anytime soon. Check it out:

COLD WAR KIDS “Secret Show” @ RBar

A good friend mentioned to us last week that the Cold War Kids were going to be playing a “secret show” at one of our favorite password sensitive bars in Korea Town.  Apparently, people have a hard time keeping secrets because within 24 hours this “secret show” was posted all over the internet, including the LA Times website. Suddenly the excitement of seeing Cold War Kids at a limited capacity venue seemed less attractive for fear of battling an enormous crowd.  However, given our love for this band, we sucked it up, crossed our fingers that kids don’t read newspaper websites, and made our way to the bar.

By the time we got there, the band had faked a cancellation, the discouraged, pissed off crowd had left, and within two hours, the band came back to showcase the new material off their upcoming record.

Needless to say, the new songs are incredible and if you weren’t there this weekend, you’ll have to wait until September 23rd, when the album ”Loyalty to Loyalty” is released, to hear their latest gems.

CUTE IS WHAT WE AIM FOR @ Atlantic Records

So we caught up with the band who has to have the worst name of any band we’ve ever interviewed, but no one can deny that these guys have one hell of a loyal fan base.  They’ve managed to play sold out shows at Madison Square Garden, toured with the likes of Fall Out Boy, sold thousands of records and now, they’re headlining their own summer tour!

It’s unfortunate that they’ve got one wimpy, pretentious name that is not only hard to chant at shows, but no straight guy would be able to utter their name without feeling some form of embarrassment…Hey, the band was the first one to say it, not us!  If you don’t believe us, watch this….

When you’re in a successful band, it’s sad to think that you’d have to lie and tell your male demographic you’re in a metal band like Mastadon and Dragonforce, but heck, when you’re driven by the brain downstairs and you don’t think before copyrighting …Cute Is What We Aim For is what you deserve…

If you can look past the name, we highly recommend checking these guys out…Their new single “Practice Makes Perfect” is blowing up and it’s only a matter of time that the guys hit the road to play yet another stadium tour.

It’s official, OZZFEST is king no more!! There’s a new heir to the summer metal festival throne and it’s the ROCKSTAR MAYHEM TOUR brought to you by Live Nation.  We were there in the thick of it all as SLIPKNOT, DISTURBED, DRAGONFORCE, and MASTODON rocked the main stage. Check out The ‘knot below wreaking havoc!

The Jagermeister and Rockstar stages was where the real action was though, as Machine Head, Underoath, and Black Tide headlined the 2nd stages. The most vicious and exciting mosh pits of the day though belonged tour new favorite metal band FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH. The pit was a war zone!!! Check them out below!

For a full blow by blow report from ROCKSTAR MAYHEM, check out later this week for exclusive interviews and performances.

Who went to see We Are Scientists last night?  If you didn’t, get jealous…We did!

W.A.S. fans lined up in front of the venue starting at the obscure hour of 10am and this gave us the opportunity to ask the real fans to muster up some questions they’ve always wanted answered by the band.  The questions were asked, the band was flattered and more importantly we can’t wait to share the answers with you die hards out there!  Stay tuned for that…

The band doesn’t necessarily make it to the states very often, due to the discovery of a loyal, obsessive following in the UK… so don’t miss the opportunity whilst We Are Scientists travel the country.

KATY KARNIVAL @ Capitol Records

Midgets, circus freaks, In N Out, gelato, and cherry chapstick!  That’s what you get when you attend a Katy Perry record release party.

The night was what one could expect when a record label has stumbled upon gold in the form of a girl with a good look, sass and a single that has sold over 500,000 copies on iTunes…Lots of schmoozing and boozing, coincided by a live performance with a backing track from none other than the honored guest.

As Katy prepares herself for punk rock summer camp, aka Warped Tour, the big question is whether or not her pop single “I Kissed A Girl” will be enough to draw a crowd amidst stubborn pop punk fans…And the even bigger question is, will Katy Perry’s career last longer than the one hit wonder that has created her sudden fame…The success of a follow up single is the only answer.

After speaking with Katy, there’s no denying that this girl is 100% personality and after seeing her perform, there’s no denying she’s got an incredible presence.  With that kind of killer combo, we’re hoping she’ll last.

Stay tuned for a full interview with Katy Perry where you can see exactly what we’re talking about.  In the meantime, check out a glimpse of her live performance at the Capitol Records building the night of her CD release party.

LOS CAMPESINOS! LIVE - Death to Los Campesinos!

The Brits came into our studio this week for an interview and we have to admit, they give puppies a run for their money in the cute department.  Here are some of the things we’ve learned about the band.

1. They just finished up their first ever U.S. tour…and loved it

2. They are not changing their surnames to Los Campesinos!

3. They share a tour bus bathroom with 7+ people and still manage to look good

4. They’re heading back into the studio this week to record 9 new songs with the same engineer who worked on their LP in Seattle

5. The girls indulge in what we like to call “expensive laundry” meaning, they enjoy buying new clothes instead of washing them

6. They’d rather spend their day off at Amoeba than at the beach

Los Campesinos! don’t have any scheduled U.S. dates to report, however the band is very much looking forward to their next visit and we encourage you check out this preview of one of the songs performed in our Artist Lounge.

SANTOGOLD @ Hollywood Virgin MegaStore

The beautiful and fashionable, Ms. Santogold, graced the courtyard of the Hollywood Virgin MegaStore yesterday evening with a secret performance and a meet and greet proceeding.  Generally when we’ve attended these types of free concerts we’re lucky to get a few songs, but Santogold pretty much gave us her entire album.   She performed L.E.S. Artistes, You’ll Find a Way, Shove It, Say Aha, My Superman, Starstruck, Unstoppable, and ended with Creator.

Amongst the bickering of music industry folk, a rumor went around stating that Santogold was not an impressive live performer, and we are happy to report that industry people have questionable taste because Santogold was absolutely fabulous!

The New York native is making her way overseas to jump on the festival circuit, but if you live on the east coast or in Chicago, consider yourselves lucky. Here are her only U.S. appearances reported for the rest of the summer

Jul 20 - New York, NY @ Central Park Summerstage

Jul 26 - Boston, MA @ Rock the Bells

Jul 27 - New York, NY @ Rock the Bells

Aug 1 - Chicago, IL @ Lollapalooza

Aug 2 - Miami, FL @ Rock the Bells

Aug 3 - Washington DC @ Rock the Bells

Recently we made our way to the GIGANTOUR 2008 @ The Long Beach Arena and we learned something new…

Megadeth + Waiting in line for 3 hours + Alcohol = THIS GUY

 We love METALHEADS!!!!

Beyond the entertainment that ensued waiting in line at the arena, we were able to catch up with Dave of Megadeth, Children of Bodom, In Flames, and Job For a Cowboy for exclusive interviews.  We kept all fan questions in mind and did in fact ask the bands for answers to your inquiries.  Make sure to keep an eye out for those shows (featuring you and the band) and we’ll be sure to give you a heads up when they’re ready for viewing.

Keep a look out for ALTITUDE at all the Metal Festivals this summer and have your band question ready!

Waiting in line for TOKIO HOTEL @ The Avalon in Hollywood

Amdist the slums of Hollywood we found some innocence today in the hearts of some of the most die hard rock fans we’ve seen in a really long time. The band responsible, German natives, TOKIO HOTEL!

It wasn’t even lunch time and dozens of T.H. fans were lined up in front of the Avalon for the 8:00pm concert.  After speaking with some excentric ladies, who went as far to create a customized “Tokio Hotel” version of the board game, Twister…

…we learned that these young ladies had been in line since 8:00pm LAST NIGHT!  This means, that over a dozen young females spent the night on the streets of Hollywood just to ensure they had their place, front and center, during the set of their favorite band.

Granted, we all can’t be 17 years old again, but knowing that there are still some die hard fans out there who will go to the end of the earth just to experience those 60 minutes of music was truly a fresh breath of air….

AIR TRAFFIC - Charolette

A little birdie over at Astralwerks told us that we had to check out this relatively new band from the UK called Air Traffic.  We went to their myspace, listened to their tracks, read up on them and we knew right away we had to go check them out.  They’re incredible!

air traffic

They played a show last week at the Avalon in Hollywood w/ Elbow, but Saturday was the very first night of their HEADLINING tour across the states.  They found some technical difficulties at the beginning of their set but quickly recovered by playing some of what, we can only assume, will be the tracks you’ll hear blaring over radio stations in the coming months.  Real catchy stuff!
